Naproxen
Indications/Uses
RA, ankylosing spondylitis, tendinitis, inflammation of skeletal muscle, gouty arthritis. Relief of pain & dysmenorrhea.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Initially 2 tab, followed by 1 tab bid morning & evening. Acute gout Initially 3 tab, then 1 tab every 8 hr until attack has subsided. Analgesic & dysmenorrhea Initially 2 tab, then 1 tab every 8 hr as needed. Max: 5 tab daily. Childn 11 mg/kg daily.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to naproxen, ibuprofen, aspirin or other NSAIDs/analgesics. History of upper GI bleeding or perforation related to previous NSAIDs therapy. Severe heart, hepatic or renal failure. Last trimester of pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Diminished utility as diagnostic signs. Decrease platelet aggregation & prolong bleeding time. Patients suffering from, or w/ previous history of bronchial asthma. Monitor adverse events in patients w/ long-term NSAID treatment. Not to be used during 1st 2 trimester of pregnancy. Avoid use during lactation. Risk of ductus arteriosus closure in fetus.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, flatulence, constipation, dyspepsia, abdominal pain, heartburn & epigastric distress, GI ulceration & perforation, peptic & non-peptic GI ulceration, melaena, haematemesis, stomatitis, ulcerative stomatitis, exacerbation of ulcerative colitis & Crohn's disease, oesophagitis; hypersensitivity reactions; hyperkalaemia; insomnia, dream abnormalities, depression, confusion & hallucinations; oedema, palpitations, cardiac failure & CHF; HTN, vasculitis; glomerular & interstitial nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, haematuria, increased serum creatinine, renal papillary necrosis & failure; abnormal liver function, fatal hepatitis & jaundice.
Drug Interactions
May increase risk of renal impairment w/ ACE inhibitors. Reduced antihypertensive effect of antihypertensives. May exacerbate cardiac failure, reduce GFR & increase plasma glycoside levels w/ cardiac glycosides. Increased risk of GI ulceration or bleeding w/ corticosteroids.
